Poetry, Horror
I have only started dipping my toes in the horror genre this year, and I have been quite selective in what I choose to read. I had read some of Ed Corbett’s poetry on X before, so I suspected I would enjoy this just as much.
Often I find poetry inscrutable and reading it has never come naturally to me. In college, despite being an English major, I struggled to understand classic poems. I am delighted to say that I read this book of poems without stumbling. They were creative but clear, rife with imagery yet not opaque in meaning. From the beginning, I was hooked.
My favorite poems were “The Woods,” The Last Crop,” “The Bottom,” “The Grave Inside,” “Reflection,” and “Becoming.” I know, that’s a lot of favorites, but I honestly couldn’t pick between them. The chapter Becoming was the star of the show, in my opinions.
I found a few of the poems had too similar concepts, such as The Door in the Woods and The Empty Room, each about finding a mysterious door that leads to the narrator’s bed. One has something unexpected in the bed, and one under. I think it was more noticeable because they were so close together.
Overall, I would say that the poetry collection is delightfully creepy and definitely worth a read. Ed Corbett is offering the book as a free download on his website: https://www.edcorbettauthor.com/books.
