Today’s WordPress prompt is: “What is the longest book you’ve ever read.
The longest book I’ve ever read was the Bible, which was over 1700 pages. Whenever I was deciding whether I wanted to be Christian, I decided to give that religion a fair chance by reading the entire Bible cover to cover. It took months, but I completed it.
And guess what? Reading it convinced me that I was not interested in becoming a Christian again in the least. I comfortably settled into being an atheist, occasionally more agnostic. I think it was mostly the Old Testament that did it for me. The wanton violence and strict (some seemingly nonsensical) laws.
For those of you who are Christian, I mean no disrespect. I am simply stating my personal beliefs, and I acknowledge your right to your own faith. And I admit Christianity is not without any beautiful aspects. But I have moved on, and I am not who I once was.
I don’t regret reading the Bible cover to cover. It taught me more about Christianity and how it intersects with my life, culture, and the lives of the faithful. It helped me decide what I truly believe.
