Today’s WordPress prompt is “Have you ever regretted reading a book – which one and why?”
This may shock many of you, but one of the books I have hated most of all is Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The first time I read it, it was out of curiosity, and the second time I had to read it for an English course in college.
I think my main problem with the book is its absurdism. Even though I usually enjoy wordplay and irony, the book was just too random and nonsensical for me.
The Duchess with the baby who turns into a pig. The hookah-smoking caterpillar. The tea party where time is stuck at 6:00 PM. The almost psychedelic world they live in. I despise it all, especially the ending, which I will not spoil here.
I guess I can kind of understand the popularity of Alice in Wonderland. It is unique and thematic. I have friends who really enjoy it. But I cannot for the life of me get into it.
